Today we are discussing ignorance and unstable people, the definition of these words, what makes people that way, and what they do to God’s word and teachings.
2 Peter 3:15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen
I have been hearing the words ignorant and unstable numerous times these days. Many people have called me ignorant, and unstable because I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Some “Christians” have called me ignorant because of the way I believe his teachings and words. The word ignorant is used to describe many Americans and the world in many ways. The word unstable has begun to describe America’s mental state of its citizens including the leaders that are campaigning to oversee it during the Presidential election when this Bible study is written. Our children in America are growing more unstable with their behaviors and thinking along with middle age adults and the elderly. Most of us do not want to be described as ignorant or unstable. Why is this occurring and how can we begin to stop it? As usual we are going to go to our Father and ask Him.
Let us first receive the meaning of these words. The KJV uses the word “unlearn” in this scripture in the place of “ignorant” the NIV uses. The Greek word for this word is amathes, and it sounds like am-ath-ace’. It means ignorant or unlearned.
The word ignorant means: lacking knowledge – resulting in showing lack of knowledge or intelligence – uninformed – uneducated – untutored.
The word unlearned means to put out of one knowledge or memory – to discard the habit of
The word unstable is used in all versions of this scripture, the Greek, NIV, and KJV. In Greek, the word is asteriktos and is sound like as-tay’-rik-tos. It means, fickle, lacking effective emotional control – readily changing as by decomposing behavior.
When I receive the meaning of these words I can remember a time when one or both words described my mental stability, behavior and lack of knowledge of who God truly was because I had not received Christ. I am sure many readers can see these words describing them at one point in their life time, or for some readers it may be describing them or someone they know now.
I remember a time when I was both ignorant of God and had no true wisdom, knowledge or understanding of who He was most of my life, because He had not given it to me. I also can remember when I was unstable, readily changing my emotions from one circumstance and relationship to another as if I was a wave being tossed back and forth like the wind.
James 1:6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.
Of course, we who know the Lord have been given His knowledge of our belief comes from Him, so if we have not received him we are going to doubt, and be an unstable being tossed back and forth like the waves never receiving anything from God and unstable in all we do. This clearly was me before I received Christ, and once I received Him I did not let the spirit of doubt and falsehood back in my heart or mind. I kept hold of who was holding on to me.
This interaction between a person and God can happen to everyone in the relationship He gives them through His Son. I am clearly no different than any other human being, and each of us can come as we are so we can be changed into who He is. Many let the spirit of falsehood back in that causes one to become ignorant, and unstable again in all he does. They have let go of who was holding on to them, they were never holding on to Him, or they began holding on to things, ways, and people tighter than Him.
The spirit of falsehood we have talked about a lot lately and this spirit will continue to work against Christ, but those who have received Him need to hold and attain what He has given them in wisdom and knowledge of who He is through His Spirit of truth. The holding on to Him, who has hold of us is key in our relationship with God. The holding on to Him is what keeps us from being ignorant and unstable. When we let go of Him that is when we can become ignorant or unstable again.Through His Spirit the spirit of falsehood has no power over us any longer. When we let go of Him we are letting go of all He has given us of himself in wisdom, and stability.
All false thoughts, ways and teachings will flee, if we remain in Him and use all He gives us of Himself. It is God’s wisdom through the Spirit of Christ that gives us the understanding of His Word that keeps us from being unstable and ignorant. Although other people and even some “Christians” may call a true child of God ignorant or unstable. We know within ourselves who has given us all we have in wisdom, and knowledge that keeps us stable and wise, and He always gets the glory for all the fruit that we bear making us his disciples.
John 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
James 1:16 Do not be deceived, my dear brothers. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created.
If you find yourself being unstable in all you do, meaning, you are lacking self-control, losing your emotions easily, and have no effective emotional control bringing you back to His peace then it is evident you are not relying on Christ. He is not able to work in you, making you, and giving you all you need during this relationship or circumstance you are going through. You are not being firmly made you are remaining unsound.
I have had, and worked with horses on an off during times in my life, and when the horses would have a problem with their feet or hoof the vet would call them unsound. This meant the horses feet were not firm they had some infection in the hoof somewhere, or a bruise in his hoof that had not healed. The hoof was not healthy or whole ready to carry me on his back. The horse had to rest and have his foot soak in a mixture of salt and other remedies that would help their hoof heal and make them sound or whole.
Christ is our remedy that heals our unstable or unsound emotions and behaviors that gives us all we need to carry our cross, which is each of our lives he has given us. Too often today in America many physicians see the unstable and quickly give them medication to cure the changing behavior without getting to the core of why their behaviors are readily changing. The medication often causes more side effects and does not remedy their changing and decomposing behaviors, and then they are given a label that describes their lacking of emotional control and they think they must accept it as a cross they are given to bear. Some are told it is genetic and they leave it at that never getting to the cause, as if there is nothing they can do about it because it came through a record of health given by their ancestors. This type of teaching hinders our faith in Christ when we devote our minds and thoughts only to them. God speaks to us through Paul as he writes to Timothy not to invest our thoughts and beliefs in genealogies of any kind.
1 Timothy 1:3-4 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer nor to devote themselves to myths, and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work-which is by faith.
Today we also see many accepting a lie for a truth about themselves when God clearly has told them it is a lie. Due to the knowledge of who God is or the way they interpret His word they have become ignorant to God's truth. We also see how His “church” has distorted his word to mean something else He clearly has not instructed in many ways.
I do think our unstable behavior, or our ignorance can run through one generation to another because it is what a child sees, has felt, and is taught through teachings of others and through the behaviors of others. They are only reacting to what they have seen, taught or have felt around them and the line can’t be broken by their natural abilities. Our anxiety, insecurities, ignorance of God, worries of this world can be seen in all of us, felt through all of us, and can spread through all of us as the spirits move from one generation to another, and sometime we are ignorant of these spirits working in and through us. This is proven throughout God’s word when we let the cares of this world, and our own minds and desires over take us.
We can be unstable and be ignorant at the same time. Ignorant means unaware, or uninformed of God’s truth. This can come through a false teaching or way God did not intend his children to learn and go in. A person who is ignorant of God’s Spirit giving them the understanding of His word will distort God’s word. Paul clearly says many times He does not want us to be ignorant of God’s teachings and the life He wants us to live through the Spirit of Christ by following His life, crucifixion, and resurrection by the faith He gives each of us. If we are unstable many times we are ignorant or unaware that we are because we have not been taught, informed, educated or tutored correctly. We can see this through all the different denominations today learning in all kinds of ways that God has not instructed them.
What happens if a person is ignorant and is unstable? God says they will distort the word of God and are headed for their own destruction.
2 Peter 3:16 He (Paul) writes the same way in all his letters speaking in them of these matters. His letter contains some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
The KJV uses the word wrest in the place of distort. Let us look and see what these words mean.
The Greek word for wrest is strebloo, it sounds like streb-lo’-o. It means to twist, turn away, to pervert – wrests or tortures language in a false sense.
Distort – to twist out of the true meaning – to twist out of a natural, normal, or original shape or condition – to cause to be perceived unnaturally.
This means an unstable and ignorant person will torture the word of God, twist it, and turn away from its truth. An unstable or ignorant person will twist the original meaning of God’s word and perceive it in a way God has not given.
As we look over these meanings and God’s teaching of what makes a person ignorant, and unstable we must look at ourselves and test the spirits of ourselves to see if God reveals a truth that is a lie we need to give up within ourselves, or a truth He has given that we need to hold on too. Each of us knows if He is truly present working in us, if we have been following man, the world, or another teaching and way He clearly did not teach or go. We have been given His Spirit and word to discern His truth. He is God, and His grace and peace will have a huge effect on us changing our ways and His understanding of His word He reveals to us clearly. If the Spirit of God is in us we will know by the drastic change that occurs within ourselves. God’s Spirit is a fire that burns within that no other spirit can give. His fire lights a person up beyond their human spirit that divides them from themselves, and the world that does not know them that is around them.
Luke 12:49 I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed!
If we find ourselves ignorant of God’s Spirit of fire working in and through us, teaching us His ways and truth His word proclaims there is a remedy that makes us sound and standing firm in His Wisdom and truth able to carry whatever life throws at us!! Because He gives us all we need to carry it! The Spirit comes first then the understanding of His word. We can go to the Cross now and receive His Spirit through our Godly sorrow that He has revealed in us, repent and begin truly holding on to Him that has taken hold of us.
Today is your day to end the ignorance and the unstable behavior within yourself, and He will begin a work in you and through you that gives Him all the glory and praise throughout each day of your life! If you are willing you can surrender to him all of what is not him in you! You will have a narrow path and it may get more narrow each day, but what you receive from Him is greater than what is in you, and what is in this world! Your path may be narrow but your mind and heart are wider than they have ever been or will ever be! Your heart and mind today can reach all the way to Heaven in your Father’s arms through His Spirit!
Matthew 7:13 Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
1 John 3:19-24 This then is how we know we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
1 John 4:4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them (every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus Christ within a person) because the one who is in you is greater than the one in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the view point of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
Through Him we have been given all we need not to stay in our ignorant state of who God is, or our unstable emotions or behaviors. We no longer are tossed back and forth by our circumstances, and with our relationships making us unstable like the waves of the sea! We are holding on to who first took hold of us at the Cross, and we are not letting go of His truth given to us through His Spirit and word! Praise Him for all the work He does in and through His children; the work He does in and through us changes the Kingdom we live in for eternity!
His peace and love always!
