A BIBLE STUDY
A GODLY WOMAN, WHO CAN FIND?
Today I was reading through my “market guide” for inspiration to market my writing so more people can be drawn to Him through it, after all, it is a gift He gave me to use for that very purpose.
As I was reading through all the literary agents, and the books they represent, the words “woman’s issues”, kept rising above all the others. I heard my Father tell me what HIS women issues are, and why they are important to Him.
I do not think many people today wonder or know what a “Godly” woman’s issues are, at least many of the ones I come in contact with do not appear to wonder. At one time in my own life I did not wonder what He thought through His Spirit His words proclaimed about my issues, because I had not received His Spirit to tell me, nor was I drawn to Him or His words through His Spirit.
Today His Spirit lead me to tell you, my readers, through Proverbs 31 so you could know how God describes a Godly woman for all of us to benefit from. Remember, God’s words are His thoughts given to us from within for us to learn about Him, His thoughts about His children, and our thoughts about Him. He deeply desires to share them with us, but to receive His desires first you have to receive Him.
The beginning of this Proverb we learn that this "proverb" or wisdom of God is given to us from King Lemuel, and it was taught to Him through his mother. This is a perfect example of how God speaks, and works in, and through his children.
She teaches him about exalting himself, and exalting others above God. She teaches him about stirring up anger and how dangerous that is. She teaches him about drinking, and she also taught him to speak up, not be afraid, and judge fairly. She teaches him about woman who do not know God and what they are after. Then we come to verse 10 and she begins teaching him about a Godly woman.
Before we go any further I must confess I was not one of these Godly women most of my life this proverb is describing. When the love and mercy of my Father appeared through His Son Jesus Christ He saved me from being the wrong woman, and through His Life-giving Spirit He opened up His word and taught me how to be one of these women who belong to Him, and any girl, or woman can be if they truly desire to be through surrendering all to Him through grace and mercy.
(NIV) Proverbs 31:10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good not harm.
A wife of noble character who can find?
The KJV uses the word “virtuous woman”, instead of a wife of “noble character.” This word virtuous in Greek is chayil, it means strength, might, efficiency, wealth, ability, and force. We know where all these virtues come from, and it is not through her own natural human power and ability, but through His in what He gives each woman or man when they are His child through Jesus Christ through His promise of His Gifted Spirit for each role a man and woman plays on earth.
During King Lemuel times the woman and man had to work to be this person of noble character, now through Christ and His Gifted Spirit God completes His work in and through us, we are free from having to make ourselves these noble children of His. He gives us our faith in Him through His Spirit of truth that comes in us when we surrender to Him. Thank you, Jesus!!
Can you find one through the eyes of God He has given you, are you looking through His eyes or your own? You will only see one when you yourself is only focused on Him.
Only when He is greater than you in your own eyes will He give you His eyes to see through.
Do you see her in the mirror because you are focused only on Him?
He is the only one that can reveal Him in yourself, and through yourself to see Him in others.
When a person is focused only Christ He will expose all truth within yourself, and through Him He will expose all others and their truth for His purpose so you can help, and lead them to Him.
He never exposes the truth for you to keep the truth of Him to yourself. His truth is given to you for you to benefit from but also to share with others through you.
When you are focused on yourself, you will not see yourself correctly, and when you are focused on others, you will not see others correctly, focus only on Him and you will see all truth within yourself, and through Him see the truth in others.
John 15:15 I (Jesus)no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I havemade known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last.
Through His Spirit we can always focus on Him and trust in Him giving us all we need to be all we need to be, and through Him be all we need to be for others.
She is worth more than rubies.
She is worth a lot! Rubies are worth a great deal, and a noble Godly woman is worth far more than rubies!!
(NIV)Her husband has full confidence in her, and lacks nothing of value
(KJV) The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
These words tell us many things about a Godly woman. A woman of God can or will be a “wife” only to one at a time. This does not say anything about a divorced woman, it says “husband” meaning one husband at one time. God quickly ask us who can find a woman who truly belongs to Him with His noble character?
God does not say a woman of God is a wife to another woman, or any other gender except a man, he says plainly a wife to her husband; one man at one time, and this proverb is talking about one wife, not wives. This proverb also tells us a Godly woman does not marry an ungodly man, “Her husband is respected at the city gates as he takes his seat among the elders, and her husband also blesses her and praises her.”She fears not following God in what He thinks, more than fearing what she thinks, or others in what they think. This kind of woman truly puts God and all He gives her above all.
Her husband as full confidence in her helping him and he will lack nothing of any value, he will not have to depend on plunder, prey, or the spoils of war. In those days, many men had to count on what they received from other tribes, and clans they had conquered. This tells us when a man is married to woman of noble character, or is virtuous through what God gives her, that husband will lack nothing because in his heart he has full confidence in his wife helping him attain what the family needs.
She brings him good and not harm
The word good in this statement means ethical, benefit, prosperity, and intellectually. This means a “Godly” woman will give good ethical advice that would benefit and bring prosperity to her husband intellectually and materially. This woman would help her husband figure out things for his good, not to harm him, but to help him. This would be a woman that shared in God’s word and wisdom in their lives through His Given Spirit. As we travel more through Proverbs 31 God points out more she does through His amazing power He has given her.
She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
Back then woman did not have the choices that women do today. God will always give you gifts, and work to use those gifts that you are passionate about. Buying flax, (linen) and wool to make clothes to take to market for sale, give to others, and for their own families was one way a Godly woman would help the community and her own family.
This woman God is describing was very passionate about sowing to make garments to sell and for their family and others. Through progress women and men have many more doors God leads them to open, but this tells us a Godly woman will have a heart to select something God has chosen, and be eager to do it through all He gives her to be able to do it with. “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength, power, ability, and an eager heart to do it.”
She rises when it is still dark, and gives meat to her household.
Today, with the progress we have made in the world, many do not have to rise when it is still dark to prepare meat for their household, but many do rise when it is still dark if they need to for their families to make sure they have something to eat or a way to eat.
She considers a field and buys it with her own earnings, she plants a vineyard.
A Godly woman always considers how she can help her family, and she will collect her earnings, and use it for His purpose in helping her family and others. This is all in God’s time as He gives blessings. A Godly woman will always share them for God’s purpose. Not leaving her with too much, and not leaving others with too little.
Planting a vineyard is one of the choices they had as income in that age. I would not mind planting a vineyard. I love planting a seed in the dirt, watch it grow and bear fruit. Others may desire another way today, like I have said, we have more choices in this age for women to receive their own pay for the work that they do.
She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.
These words inspired me to go further than I have been going through His given power that lifted me past where I was. Her arms are strong for her task because He has given it to her, and she sees that what she is doing is profitable to her family in all ways.
She never stops when she needs to keep going, her lamp never goes out, she never quits doing and being all she needs to be during the time she has been given for her family and for others in words and deeds God has given her. As we travel through the words we see she does more and more through her gifts God has given her and then He tells us how she speaks, and reacts to her future no matter what it is.
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
Our wisdom and strength comes from God, man or woman and so does our dignity. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength. This woman today is clothed in the Spirit of Christ, and every woman that received Him since His resurrection.
This woman today has His strength and dignity. Because she is clothed with His strength and dignity, and this amazes me, she can laugh at the days to come!! No matter what problems she faces, death, loss, or poverty, she can laugh because of who He is!!
This woman knows God and knows His power is much greater than her own, and knows He is much powerful than the world she lives in!!So powerful that she can laugh at the days to come!!
(NIV) She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
(KJV) She opens her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue, is the law of kindness.
These words reveal that a Godly woman’s greatest kindness is shown by her wisdom of God’s word which is the “law of kindness”, or “faithful instruction” given to her children, other family members, friends, community, and around the world today because of today's technology. We can write and speak to anyone with a push of a button!
We can communicate His wisdom across the world in many ways through pushing a few buttons!! This word faithful means these women will always share His word, or law, they will never give up, his wisdom never fails her, or the people who want to receive it around her because it is His. Those who want to receive His kindness through His Word whether it convicts them, defends them, or confirms what they have already been given, they know it is given to save them not to destroy them.
Not many today think of God’s word and sharing it with their children, or anyone else, as an act of kindness they can give to one another. Not many children, and others understand this is the greatest kindness they can receive from any parent or anyone else.
If I knew a great truth that would save people’s souls and greatly benefit them beyond their own imagination, and did not tell them what kind of man or woman would I be? The unkindest person of all! What good does it do to gain the whole world if a person loses their very soul?
Unfortunately many are prideful in their own eyes, afraid, and reject His kindness through His words that are given to help and guide them into being the most perfect image of themselves there is. Those who know His truth like this Godly woman will never stop sharing what He has given them for the building up of their own family through His truth and grace. He will not stop there, He will overflow much deeper, wider, and longer with his love to change the world they live in, no matter how others respond to their words or deeds they they will be faithful to God above all.
Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.
God tells us many woman do noble things but that does not mean they know God. There are many noble people in the world that do nobble things but do not have a relationship with God, and God tells us that a Godly woman, “you” surpasses those nobble “good” working women, and the next few statements tell us why.
(NIV)Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
(KJV) Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain. But a woman that feared the LORD, she shall be praised.
These words teach us what a Godly woman is not and what a Godly woman is at the core of their existence.
The word charm, or favor is the same word in Hebrew as grace. This word is “chen” in Hebrew. It means charm, gently pleasant, and careful. God is telling us here that a natural woman can have their own grace, or show favor toward us, be good, be gentle, and charming but it can be deceiving. This would be a kind, nice, and gentle spoken woman but what is she lacking?
Then He tells us beauty is fleeting. He is talking about physical beauty here not spiritual beauty. No kidding! Everything in our physical make-up of our bodies drops, our face, neck, harms, breast, and everything bellow! We must exercise as if we were young to keep us looking young.
There are some women I know that are as beautiful, (without cosmetic surgery) physically to me as they are in their younger pictures of themselves. For me, that is not the case, although I still think of myself beautiful in many ways even though I have experienced all the “drops”! The Spirit of God has taught me my true beauty comes from within, and through His wisdom I have learned how to manage the "drops." If a woman’s own natural grace can be deceiving, and her own natural beauty can be fleeting what can a woman be praised about?
“she fears the Lord”
This is what God tells us is the difference from the deception of a natural person’s deceiving charm or their own grace, and the difference between a natural woman’s beauty that is fleeing, and that is "she fears the LORD", and He tells us they should be praised for this reason. Not for their gentleness or kindness, not for their beauty, but because they fear the Lord.
There are many charming people in the world, but they do not know God, and they are everywhere in our churches, jobs, families, communities, government, and around the world. Many celebrities, writers, “self-help” human spirit led motivating speakers are growing, and have been growing for centuries, but they do not know God or fear Him. Many are following these types of women and men in our world today. Paul gives us great insight of what some of these charming men and women may look like in our churches. Paul says men, but we know all humans can be deceived.
2 Corinthians 11:13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.
A true Godly woman knows their grace only comes from Him and He gets the glory for it, and her beauty comes from within and He will always get the glory for it because of all He has given her she fears not pleasing Him above all. She does not care what others think, and feel above what He thinks and she knows what He gives her to live with and through is what saves her from herself, Satan and the world she lives in.
Do we as women today truly fear the Lord above losing all else in this world?
(NIV)Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gates.
(KJV) Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.
In the Old Testament at the time this proverb was written it was before Christ as I briefly wrote before, all the Godly women, and men had to work through the law, and their works would praise them at the city gates. The work she did for her family, community, and all the works she did in making sacrifices to God because she feared Him and wanted to do whatever He asked her to do as a Godly woman were praised.
What is different for a Godly woman who is in Christ since His death and resurrection? Does our work praise us, or does He get the praise and glory for His work in and through us at the city gates?
God has not changed, He still wants us to be righteous and Holy but obviously, we cannot in our natural selves because the blood of animals was never intended to save us, but was given to help us recognize we need something much greater. Him actually living in and through us was His plan since the creation of the world, and when His Son died, this plan had finally come to pass!
God does not change but we do! WE now receive His Son and He does the work in and through us, and that is why He gets all the praise, we no longer get praised for our work, and thank God, because I would be exhausted trying to be this Godly woman on my own doing all the sacrifices that were required, all the festivals that I, and my family would have to fulfill, and more important our holiness and righteousness we could never full fill on our own.
I am sure if I could speak to a Hebrew woman trying to live a Godly life doing all she was supposed to do to be all she was required by God to be, she would not have His peace, grace, and strength. She would grow very tired of trying to accomplish all He was asking her in a hurry. At some point, she would not be able to do all He required of her no matter how much she desired to be this Godly woman. She would not change internally like we do today through His gifted Spirit that gives us all we need to keep moving forward!
Galatians 5:4 You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen from Grace. But by faith we eagerly wait through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
A Godly woman today is justified by God’s faith and love given to her through Jesus Christ. A Godly woman, and man are free from having to make themselves righteous and holy. Through Him we can be His righteous holy children, man or woman, through His righteousness the hope he gives us, and His hope never fails.
Galatians 5:16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
God has done everything for a Godly woman through Jesus Christ. If you desire to be a Godly woman or man you will desire to live by His Spirit. You will not want to gratify the desires of your sinful nature, you will desire to live in and through His Spirit. You will fear losing His Spirit, and wanting to please His Spirit above all else.
Do you desire to live in His Spirit?
All these traits of a Godly woman will be manifested in you through His Spirit, you will be changing by His power and grace everyday as you live through His Spirit, and His Spirit has no limit in His work in and through you for the building up of His Kingdom.
All of who we are will be what He works in and through us for His Kingdom, and if we remain in Him, He will remain in us!! Go back through each of these traits and see if the faith He has given you is manifesting this behavior in you.
If not ask Him what you are lacking or ask someone to help you to know what you are lacking so you can fulfill your hearts greatest desire in being a Godly, complete person, the best version of yourself you can be.
He is faithful, and He will tell you what you need personally or through another one of His children. He gives each of us the faithfulness of His Son to live in and through us for all.
His love and grace always
